Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes were founded in 1971. The team was originally the New England Whalers and were part of the WHA. They joined the NHL as part of the NHL – WHA merger in 1979 were renamed the Hartford Whalers. The Team relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1997 and changed their name to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes have had several successful season since relocating from Hartford. The team has won 3 division championships, 2 conference championships and 1 Stanley Cup. Their first appearance in the Stanley Cup final came in 2001-02 season. During their playoff run they beat the defending Stanley Cup champions New Jersey Devils in Round one, Montreal Canadiens in round 2 and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Conference Finals. In the Cup finals they meet the Detroit Red Wings and surprised everyone with a game 1 win, but that didn't continue as the Wings took the next 4 games and won the series 4 games to 1.

The Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup in 2005-06 season. In route to the Championship they defeated Montreal, New Jersey and Buffalo before clashing with the Edmonton Oilers fro the Championship. This was the first time in NHL history that 2 WHA franchises met in the Stanley Cup Finals. The series was hard fought with the Canes winning it is 7 games. The Championship was the first major sports team championship from any team from North Carolina.

The Carolina Hurricanes roster had several veteran players who had waited years to hoist the Stanley Cup trophy. Rod Brind'Amour and Bret Hedican both played 15 years and Glen Wesley the only remaining Whaler played 18 seasons.
