Future of 'Blurred Lines' Case Is ... Blurry

    Tuesday, June 30, 2015

A federal judge Monday said he is not inclined to grant Pharrell Williams a new trial in his "Blurred Lines" copyright case against Marvin Gaye's family but called a $1.6 million profits award excessive. U.S. District Judge John Kronstadt issued a tentative ruling on various post-trial motions after the $7.4 million jury verdict that stunned the music industry.

Twerking makes it into Oxford Dictionary

    Wednesday, June 24, 2015

The word "twerk" dates back to as early as 1820, the Oxford English Dictionary says as it announced twerking as one of 500 new entries this year. The word rocketed into popular use following US singer Miley Cyrus' controversial gyrating at the 2013 MTV Music Awards with singer Robin Thicke.

Could Taylor Swift have the song of summer?

    Monday, June 22, 2015

The annual "contest" to see which infectious tune will define the sunny months ahead is already underway, but so far, no song is an odds-on favorite. While past title-holders such as Iggy Azalea and Carly Rae Jepsen were clear front-runners from the get-go, "it's not always obvious," says Billboard charts co-director Gary Trust, noting the showdown between Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines and Daft Punk's Get Lucky in 2013.

Justin Bieber, Usher: Song Theft Lawsuit Goes Forward

    Friday, June 19, 2015

Could Justin Bieber and Usher be headed for a similar fate to what Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams encountered with "Blurred Lines"? In a unanimous vote yesterday , a Richmond, Virginia appeals panel overturned a lower court's ruling that a suit filed against Bieber, Usher and others by songwriters Devin Copeland and Mareio Overton was without merit. They'd claimed that Usher initially got their song "Somebody to Love" in 2008 from a music scout and then took it to Bieber, who changed it from straight R&B to dance pop but retained a number of key elements of their original in creating his own identically named tune.

Marvin Gaye's Kids Move To Halt Sales Of Blurred Lines

    Thursday, June 18, 2015

Marvin Gaye's kids have asked a judge to halt sales of Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams' hit song Blurred Lines or award them half of the track's royalties following their recent copyright infringement victory. The musicians were ordered to pay $7.3 million to Gaye's children following a trial in March, which concluded with a Los Angeles jury deciding they had copied portions of the late soul legend's 1977 track Got to Give It Up.

    New music

    Thursday, June 18, 2015

Flo Rida is still riding high on the success of GDFR, while Robin Thicke could really use a hit after the fiasco that was Paula. There's a breezy, summertime feel about this one, although... the whistling? Again? Didn't he just do that a couple of years ago with Whistle? HHH Teaming up with super-producer Max Martin, Canadian crooner the Weeknd delivers another sexy, mid-tempo R&B number.

Lee Suckling: We need to stop slut shaming

    Tuesday, June 16, 2015

Miley Cyrus copped backlash for her racy Blurred Lines performance, while not much at all was said about Robin Thicke. Photo / Getty When we tell a young woman to cover her shoulders, ensure her bra straps are not showing, or send her home from school because the hem on her shirt is too high, we're "slut-shaming" her and reinforcing a rape culture that places blame on victims for "asking for it".
