MLB Pipeline checks in from Pirates camp

Homegrown stars such as Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole have played instrumental roles in the Pirates resurgence, helping the team reach the playoffs in each of the last two years. But Larry Broadway, the club's director of Minor League operations, said the Pirates player development system can't afford to rest on its laurels. They have to keep talent flowing to the Major Leagues.

Liriano, Morton on the hill a welcome sight for Bucs

Francisco Liriano was hardly seen in his first two Spring Trainings with the Pirates. Charlie Morton wasn't expected to be seen when this 2015 season gets underway. So there was the welcome sight Thursday of both veteran pitchers putting up two zeroes each in a 2-1 exhibition loss to the Yankees.

Ready to make leap, Bucs' Lambo has new number, outlook

His uniform number -- from the back-shelf 57 to the front-row 15 -- isn't the only thing Andrew Lambo has changed. Some things you can't see. "This year I'm confident, physically and mentally focused and ready," Lambo said. "Last year I was unprepared, not confident."

Bats unable to back pitching in loss to Yankees

Left-hander Francisco Liriano and righty Charlie Morton, two-fifths of the Bucs' rotation, each pitched two shutout innings in their first appearances of the spring in a 2-1 loss to the Yankees on Thursday afternoon at McKechnie Field.

Harrison not concerned about minor ankle injury

Josh Harrison, who exited Wednesday's game in the first inning after turning his left ankle, will rest as a precaution for the next couple of days, but he said the injury is minor.

Bucs lead clubs eager to take next step this season

As we speak, there are 29 baseball teams in Spring Training that are all talking about "taking the next step." The only team that does not have to talk like this is the San Francisco Giants. The Giants could very easily discuss "taking the same step," the one that has led them to three World Series championships over five seasons.

New Bucs battery makes most of first pairing

The Bucs plugged in a new battery on Wednesday. Gerrit Cole and his spring ERA both liked the connection. In the start against the Blue Jays, a 4-1 Pirates loss, Cole was paired in game conditions for the first time with Francisco Cervelli, and the two hit it off well.

Cole, Cervelli click early as Bucs fall to Blue Jays

Dalton Pompey, Kevin Pillar and Dioner Navarro all had doubles as the Blue Jays came away with a 4-1 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at McKechnie Field. Pittsburgh's lone run came in the second inning, when Jordy Mercer scored on a wild pitch by left-hander Rob Rasmussen.

Pirates agree with 21 players on 2015 contracts

The Pirates on Wednesday announced contract agreements with 21 players, bringing their entire 40-man roster into the fold.

Walker: Alvarez 'what you want in a teammate'

Pedro Alvarez doesn't often speak on his own behalf, but his teammates are eager to vouch for him, most notably good friend Neil Walker.
