    Bainbridge Performing Arts will present the opening night for its production of "HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Rock music, counter-culture and the sexual revolution take center stage in "HAIR," the first and most successful rock musical of all time. Featuring the iconic numbers "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine," "I Believe in Love," "Hair," "I Got Life," "What a Piece of Work Is Man" and "Hippie Life," the musical offers meaningful commentary on the generational divide of the '60s, lending vitality and insights that remain relevant today.

    Making his Bainbridge Performing Arts debut as choreographer of the upcoming production of "Hair," which opens officially Friday, Oct. 9, the East Coast transplant said that his first island show has been deceptively difficult to arrange, given that it's designed to appear very organic and carefree. "The show poses a specific challenge in that most of the cast is on stage most of the time," Duffy said.

    The word of youthful rebellion spreads quicker when set to music, so naturally Broadway's most rebellious musicals attracting younger theatregoers - WEST SIDE STORY, HAIR, RENT and certainly the current HAMILTON - have been purveyors of musical styles not commonly heard in Times Square houses at the times of their openings. Half of the company of the current Broadway revival of Spring Awakening cannot hear the alternative rock score of the show they're in; at least not in the same way composer Duncan Sheik and bookwriter /lyricist Steven Sater heard it when they created the piece, but that makes the musical's statements about communication between adolescents and their parents all the more potent.

Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts has not offered a school musical for many years. Now the school is making up for lost time with Hair , opening Thursday at the school's Montgomery Arts Theater.
