REVIEW | Blues prove hard to explain in PTE's new play

    Monday, January 26, 2015

With that cheeky quip, playwright, performer, and "natural born bluesman" Raoul Bhaneja sets up the central crux of his play with music, Life, Death and the Blues , which premiered at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille last fall and now sees its first Winnipeg run at Prairie Theatre Exchange. What is the blues? And if you're not Muddy Waters or B.B. King - that is to say black, American, and born in the first half of the 20th century - can you really understand the music? Part autobiography, part blues concert, and part musical anthropology, Life, Death and the Blues is ambitious in its scope and its presentation, which may explain why it seems only partially successful as a piece of theatre.

    Friday, January 23, 2015

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As you book your limo to attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in April and celebrate the inclusion of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts , here's another inductee to consider: Louis Jordan, also known as "the Father of Rhythm & Blues," "the Grandfather of Rock 'n' Roll" and "King of the Juke Boxes." Jordan, a witty showman whose hits included "Is You Is or Is You Ain't " - a song he often dedicated to Hollywood scoundrel Errol Flynn during the star's 1943 paternity scandal - and the B.B. King staple "Let the Good Times Roll," was inducted into the Rock Hall in 1987 as an early influence.

Best Concert you Have Ever Been To...

    Friday, January 16, 2015

How the heck did Buddy Rich get on this lineup? Buddy Rich? Don't get me wrong, I saw Buddy live, and he was terrific. But putting him on the bill with groups like Iron Butterfly, Booker T, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, et al, seems a little out of place.
